Sahara India’s insurance refund policy mainly revolves around three situations: free-look cancellation, policy surrender/termination, and the separate government-led CRCS Sahara Refund Portal for stuck Sahara cooperative deposits, which is different from life insurance policy refunds.
Free-look cancellation and premium refund
Life insurance policies of Sahara India generally offer a “free-look period” (typically 15–30 days from receiving the policy document) during which the policyholder can return the policy if dissatisfied with its terms and conditions. In such a case, the company refunds the premium after deducting proportionate risk premium for the period on cover, medical examination expenses, stamp duty and any applicable taxes. The policy usually becomes void once the refund is processed and all benefits and risk cover cease from the original commencement date.
Policy surrender, lapse and revival
If the policyholder stops paying premiums after the policy has acquired a surrender value (usually after paying the minimum required premiums for a specified period), the policy can be surrendered as per product terms. On surrender, the company pays the surrender value, which is calculated based on the plan’s rules and is often lower than total premiums paid, and thereafter all benefits terminate. If premiums are not paid within the grace period, the policy may lapse, but many Sahara plans allow revival within a fixed time (often up to 5 years) by paying arrears with interest and providing proof of insurability
Cancellation request process
For cancelling or surrendering a Sahara India life insurance policy, the policyholder usually needs to visit the nearest Sahara India Life Insurance branch with a written request and supporting documents. Commonly required documents include the original policy bond, a duly filled surrender/cancellation form, identity and address proof, and a cancelled cheque (preferably with the policyholder’s name pre-printed) so that the refund amount can be credited directly to the bank account. For online-originated policies or free-look cancellations, some intermediaries indicate that you may initiate the request through customer care or designated online forms, but final processing still follows company rules.
Special clauses: suicide, misrepresentation and charges
Most Sahara term and traditional plans contain standard clauses under which, if the life assured dies by suicide within a specified period (usually 12 months) from policy commencement or revival, the policy may become void or only a limited refund (such as premiums paid after deducting charges) may be payable, depending on the exact wording. If there is misstatement of age or material facts, the company can adjust benefits, revise premiums, or even cancel the policy; in some cases, only a modified product is offered and no premium refund is made if the correct age renders the life assured uninsurable under that product. The insurer also reserves the right to deduct applicable taxes, charges and levies from any refund amount as per prevailing regulations.mas360
CRCS Sahara Refund Portal vs. insurance policies
The CRCS Sahara Refund Portal was launched by the Government of India to return money to depositors of four Sahara cooperative societies whose deposits were stuck, and is not meant for standard life insurance policy refunds. Eligible cooperative society depositors can apply online through the portal, submit their claim details and documents, and, subject to verification, receive up to a specified limit (commonly up to ₹50,000 per depositor in the initial phase) directly into their bank account within about 45 days; this process runs separately from Sahara India Life Insurance’s internal cancellation or surrender procedures.
